Electronic cars will undoubtedly become standard over the next few decades as fossil fuels continue on their journey towards their inevitable demise. There have been electronic cars all ready, like the infamous hybrid car the Prius, but fully electronic cars seem like a science fiction fantasy at the moment.

Nissan are trying to change that though, with the genius titled Nissan Leaf, a brand new fully electronic car. Some of us will think it’s a wonderful step forward for eco-friendly transport, and others will be put off by some of the myths surrounding electronic cars. You know the ones, ‘it’ll be too expensive’, ‘it will run out of juice every five minutes,’ that sort of thing.

In an attempt to change our minds and debunk some of the electric car myths Nissan have made a series of video about the Leaf tacking some of the common misconceptions, the first being the misconception an electronic car will die on the way to work.

In the first of the videos some doubters who demoed the Leaf, having managed to last a week on one charge, the doubters are converted. Check it out below and see if Nissan can change your mind and prove that electric cars are a genuine alternative to petrol or diesel powered cars, or at least for those of us who live in big cities which actually have power-points.

With the holiday season upon us and the January sales coming up in a couple of weeks maybe now is the right time to think about a new cool gadget for your car. It doesn’t matter if you drive an F1 road car or a Fiat Punto, here is a list of 3 cool accessories for your car.

For those concerned with raising fuel prices the Econav is more than just a satnav system. The Econav takes into account the type of car you have and the number of passengers and plots routes which are the most fuel effective. Take a full car of passengers through some twisty country lanes might well be shorter but is it more fuel economical than taking the motorway. The Econav lets you know.

The manufactures say that it can save you over £200 in six months which is more than the cost of the unit! You can find out more here and here and you can get hold of one from Amazon.co.uk.

If you have a sports car then you might want to make sure you look the part while driving. How about a part of Bluetooth sunglasses? These great looking sunglasses not only keep the sun out of your eye but they will also keep you connected while you are on the go, but without the cyborg looking earpiece.

The lenses of the glasses have a smoke mirrored finish and the volume control and call answer buttons are cleverly located on the arm-piece. It is compatible with all standard Bluetooth equipped phones and it will give you a talk time of 3.5 hours and standby time of 90 hours.

You can get them for $49 (about £30) from ThinkGeek.

Finally for the all the iPhone users, there is now hands-free dictation available in the form of the Dragon Dictation.

With Dragon Dictation voice recognition application you can dictate your text and email messages directly to your phone. Although it isn’t completely hands-free as you still need to actually send the text message or email, but I am sure that you could do that while at the next traffic lights! Nuance, the makers of the Dragon NaturallySpeaking software which is used in the Dragon Dictate app, say that it is up to five times faster than typing on the keyboard!

Note: At the time of writing it is only available in the US store but we are hoping it will become available in the UK in the future.

Porsche has refined the 911 GT3 for the 2010 motor sport season. The new Porsche 911 GT3 R has been created for racing and follows the international FIA GT3 regulations. It is powered by a four litre, six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine and delivers a maximum output of 480 bhp which is 30 bhp more than the 2009 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup thanks to its increase in engine size by 200 cc.

It you want a road car version of these racers then you can get one in the form of the 911 GT3 RS, which goes on sale in February next year.

The new model is also good for the ambitious amateur racing driver due to the anti-lock braking system, traction control and an electronic throttle with ‘blip’ function on gearbox down-changes which makes it much easier for drivers to get used to this new GT3 race car than its predecessor.

The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in Birmingham. The car is built by the Porsche Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to customer teams around the world as of spring 2010. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is 279,000 Euros plus local sales tax/VAT.

The title of this post deserves a sub-title along the lines of “the future is here today”, but I will resist the temptation! However driverless cars are getting more and more credible ever year.

Recently, Stanford University’s School of Engineering and Volkswagen America held a special dedication ceremony for the new Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) which will do research on vehicle-safety, environmental issues, as well as continuing work on autonomous driving. And this is where the car that parks itself comes in.

As part of the ceremony the Standard/VW team demonstrated the “first ever” autonomous parking by a driverless car. The VW Passat called Junior entered into a car park, found the firs empty space and reversed into it. There was nobody in the car… It was all handled by computer.

At the same event VAIL also unveiled the Pike’s Peak Audi TT-S, that they hope will drive itself up the 2010 Pikes Peak course without a driver.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America. The race is run on a 12.42 mile course with 156 turns that begins at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,110 foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs.

The shots are of a camouflage prototype undergoing performance and durability testing at Germany’s famed Nürburgring. The RS is set for launch in early 2009.

The Focus RS will be getting a front-wheel-drive with a reworked front axel to keep the fun into driving. The RS’s Duratec will be optimised to generate around 300 HP with 400Nm torque.

We’ll be seeing the new Focus RS at the London Motor Show in late July where we’re expecting to hear all the details.
